If we say that scientists devote themselves to discovering the principles of the nature in order to help us understand the world better, then engineers try their best to apply the principles to create innovation in order to meet people’s needs and enhance the quality of our life. It is never easy to popularize the innovation as there are always conventions and prejudice blocking engineers’ path to success.
Engineers’ innovative design is aimed at changing the way we get accustomed to so that it will meet our needs better. However, to change one’s way is hardly accepted due to the dependence of the old habits. As a result, even the products or the designs are in high quality sometimes they are failed to be applied due to the prejudice or convention. For example, now we all are used to the normal umbrellas. Actually some inventors think of another improved version of umbrella which has plastic around the umbrella falling down to the ground like the curtain. In countries like Singapore, where the rainfall is often and heavy, this type of umbrellas is obviously more suitable for people. Nevertheless, some still think it strange to wear this kind of umbrella. If nobody dares to have a try then the brilliant innovation will be gone with the wind.
It reaches the consensus that engineers’ design will change the world. Still, whether engineers are able to change the world is not only determined by the quality of the innovation sometimes it is constrained by people who refuse to accept. In one word, to make our life better is not only the engineers’ duty but also ours.

Indeed, the development and popularization of an innovation is affected by many factors and faced with many frustrations on the way. Just like what is written in this post, the work of the engineers is only one of the fractions in the process. Whether people can accept this kind of invention is also critical. The influence of the acceptance on an invention can be seen in two ways. First, many good ideas will be killed in cradle because of the lack of financial support for R&D. Think about the pioneering days of personal computer, if it was not for the insistence of a manager who collected a fund eventually after many failures, Toshiba would never become one of the largest laptop manufacturer. Moreover, some inventions cannot have further development due to convention. This is ususlly because people are conditioned to the things they use and find the other versions are odd and is not willing to use them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Xiao Pu that people should open their mind and try to accept the new ideas that they may never think about. Do not be scared because it is new and do not hesitate because it breaks conventions and do not afraid to make mistakes, for creation and mistakes are essential in the society advancement.
